Becoming a Crane Operator
Operating cranes is a challenging yet rewarding role that requires technical skills, attention to detail and strong commitments to safety. A crane operator is responsible for operating and controlling a crane to lift and move heavy objects. The specific requirements for becoming a certified crane driver may differ depending on your location and the type of crane being operated. Generally, you must meet the requirements listed below to become certified.
Physical requirements:
To be eligible to operate a crane in most countries, you must be 18 years old and in good physical condition.
Crane operator training program:
There are several institutions that offer crane operating training courses that teach the fundamentals of crane operation. These courses qualify you for high-risk work and crane operating licenses. A written and practical skills test must be passed then you will receive a Certificate III or IV in Construction Crane Operations and Certificate III or IV in Mobile Crane Operations.
Licences:
To perform potentially dangerous tasks, crane operators must hold a high-risk work licence. Additionally, operators usually hold a Heavy Vehicle licence, which requires a minimum of two years open car license to obtain.
Experience:
After completing a training program, gaining practical experience is crucial. Under the supervision of a certified crane operator, you can develop the skills necessary to operate cranes safely and efficiently.
Crane operating is a high-risk job which not only involves education and training, but a skilled and successful crane operator must possess a range of qualities and characteristics that enable them to perform their job effectively and safely. These include attention to detail, technical skills, physical fitness, problem-solving skills, communication skills, safety awareness, and dependability. A crane operator must pay close attention to the details of the job, operate the crane's controls with precision, read blueprints, and perform maintenance tasks as needed. They must also be physically fit, able to work in challenging weather conditions, and have the ability to quickly assess and respond to unexpected situations. Good communication skills are essential for interacting with other workers on the job site, and safety must be a top priority at all times.
