Weather Conditions: When To Operate

The weather is unpredictable, but our safety standards aren’t.

It is an essential part of the industry to know how to operate and mitigate risks if the weather circumstances change for the worse.

There are three main weather conditions that heavily impact a cranes safe operation.

Wind

It is important to note that while you may not feel a breeze on the ground, the higher up you go the faster the wind speed. Operators experience and risk planning will be a key role in mitigating this risk if it were to occur suddenly. Following a significant increase in wind speed the crew will gauge their ability to control and secure the load for a safe landing. Conversely, if high wind speed is present before the lift, the lift will most likely be postponed until weather conditions clear so that they are operating in a controlled environment.

Lightning

While some cranes are fitted with lightning rods, mobile cranes do not have this protection. Thus, it is extremely dangerous to operate. A strike could severely damage electrical systems causing malfunctions and proposing a large safety risk to both the crane and most importantly the operator. A predicted likelihood of a storm on the day of operation will most likely see the job postponed until it can be completed safely.

Rain

Heavy rain means poor visibility for crane operators. When there isn’t a clear vision of the load or landing, the job will be ceased immediately. Rain also has an impact on the ground stability and access to a site, to prevent damage to the property and to the crane high rain fall can often lead to the job being postponed.

Why do mobile cranes need to be maintained?

Mobile cranes need to be regularly maintained to identify whether there are any faults, damage or deterioration that could lead to equipment failure during a lift. Preventative maintenance can also prevent expensive repairs by not allowing damage to deteriorate or worsen over a longer period of use and time.

Failure to properly maintain a mobile crane can create major risks for crew members and may even cause extensive property damage. Evidently, equipment failure can result in increased project costs and project timelines.

How often do cranes need to be inspected?

Different types of mobile cranes require different types of inspections to which are either carried out routinely and prior to crane operations. A pre- lift inspection will look at different elements of the crane’s functionality and part in comparison to a routine check.

Pre-Operational Checks

Pre-operational checks are performed prior to the operation of the crane. This daily check is an essential safeguard measure to ensure the crane is safe to operate.

Some checks that are conducted in pre-operational checks are:

• Administrative information (e.g., crane registration is up to date)

• Signage and charts (e.g., warning placards in place)

• Controls and indicators (e.g., fuel gauge and engine gauge)

• Air, fluids, and their associated systems (e.g., engine oil level and battery oil level)

• Safety items (e.g., fire extinguisher and counterweight)

• Structural and operational items (e.g., telescoping boom and boom cylinders)

Routine Inspection (Monthly or Quarterly)

Routine inspections should be carried out quarterly or monthly, depending on the type of crane and the associated manufacturer’s recommendations. Importantly, if the crane has not been in use, it is still important to carry out all inspections as the crane could have deteriorated when not in use. Most commonly, corrosion and external damage.

Some checks that are conducted in routine inspection checks are:

• Crane functions and controls

• Emergency and safety switches

• Lubrication

• Verify the accuracy of load moment indicator (LMI) and rated capacity indicator (RCI) devices with a test lift using a certified test weight

• Filters, fluid levels and leaks

• Visual inspection and measurements of critical parts (e.g., brakes, gears, fasteners, pins, shafts, wire ropes, sheaves, locking devices and electrical contractors)

• Signage (e.g., warning signs and control markings)

• Wheels and tyres wear

• Any other items nominated in the crane manufacturer’s handbook

It is important to note that annual, and major inspections, are also an non-negotiable for crane maintenance, and are carried out on a less regular basis. An annual inspection being annually, which focuses on any possible damage that may have been missed in the monthly checks. Whereas, a major inspection must be carried out at the end of the cranes recommended operational lifespan, which is allocated by the manufacturer, or at least 10 years from when the crane was first commissioned. All structural and mechanical components of the crane are analysed in this inspection.

Fossil Fuels and the challenge ahead

Roughly 90% of the world’s carbon emissions originate from the burning of fossil fuels. While most of Australia’s emissions come from energy production, it’s closely followed by transport, agriculture, and industrial processes. On a global scale, working towards lowering those emissions is a hotly contested and highly controversial topic depending on who you talk to.

Whether we like it or not, Australia’s high level of emissions per person reflects the nation’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels as a primary energy source and, in particular, the dominant role of coal in the production of electricity. With a large chunk of the national coal production occurring right here in Queensland, many people are intrigued to see how the Sunshine State is faring against the national renewable energy targets.

How Queensland Is Working Towards Renewable Energy

Australia is the world’s 14th highest carbon emitter, contributing just over 1% of all global emissions. Considering that we are the world’s 55th most populated country, we’re certainly punching way above what we should be in terms of our national output.

However, actively working towards renewable energy targets is a way to lower our position on the list. Over the course of the last five years, Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions total was reduced as a result of land use change and forestry, removing 4.9% of our emissions in 2020.

While the Federal Government is actively working towards renewable energy targets by providing financial incentives to pursue small and large scale solar power installations, things are moving at a different pace in Queensland. As the state aims to become a world leader in renewable hydrogen development and export, it would seem that the Sunshine State is aiming for the renewable energy sector to become a standalone industry in its own right.

As of January 1 2022, 20.4% of all electricity used in Queensland was produced by renewable resources, such as hydro power and solar power. Queensland now also boasts fifty large-scale renewable energy projects, representing $10.7 billion of investment, 7,900 construction jobs, 5,774 megawatts (MW) of clean energy and more than 13.8 million tonnes of avoided emissions each year - but could we be doing more?

In 2020, Tasmania was the first state in Australia to produce 100% of its annual energy from renewable resources. While this was mostly generated from hydropower, South Australia has also been making significant leaps towards hitting their renewable energy targets, with just under 60% of their energy production also linked to renewable resources in the same year. Compared to Queensland’s figures, it would seem that we have a lot of catching up to do.

Thankfully, there are a multitude of large scale developments in the pipeline in Queensland that will help to change this, and it spells good news for the state’s construction industry, which will be highly influential in seeing these projects through to completion.

One key example of this is the Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund, which includes $2 billion dollars worth of funding for energy government owned corporations to increase ownership of commercial renewable energy and hydrogen projects, as well as supporting infrastructure, including in partnership with the private sector. The domino effect will see all corners of the industry reap the rewards, and ideally see the state on track to hit their 50% renewable energy target by the year 2030.

While the 2032 Brisbane Olympics is still over ten years away, work is already commencing right around South East Queensland, including on the Gold Coast.

When Brisbane was announced as the winning bidder by the International Olympic Committee in July 2021, it was a big deal. Scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8 in 2032, it will be the third Summer Olympic Games to be hosted by an Australian city, behind the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

According to the State Government, the Brisbane bid relied on the premise that over 80% of the venues required to host the international sporting event were already existing infrastructure, which significantly helped in getting “Brisvegas” across the line as the host. Although the Brisbane Olympics are polarising amongst economists, there's no doubt that the construction sector is set to benefit from the upcoming event.

When the great city of Brisbane was recently announced as the winning bidder by the International Olympic Committee in July 2021, it was a big deal. Scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8 in 2032, it will be the third Summer Olympic Games to be hosted by an Australian city, behind the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

While the Brisbane Olympics bid relied on the premise that over 80% of the venues required to host the international sporting event were already existing infrastructure, a 2019 feasibility study suggested that over $900 million dollars would be required from both state and federal funding in order to host the games here in the Sunshine State.

Although still eleven years away, detractors have already started to grumble as to how we could possibly afford such an expense given the current times that the world is experiencing. However, there’s no denying that the forecasted $8 billion dollar boost to our local economy could leave lasting impacts that benefit us all, with the construction sector in particular set to reap the rewards in the short term.

The Brisbane Olympics And Construction Explained

Although South East Queensland already has over 80% of the required venues and facilities in place, there’s still another 20% to build over the next decade. The good news? Star Casino On Track To Reopen In 2022

With four new hotels housing over 3,500 new rooms, the Star Casino is on track to reopen in 2022 and wow visitors and locals alike on the Gold Coast.

As Australia’s largest non-capital city, experts say that the population of the greater Gold Coast region is set to reach over 720,000 by as early as 2022.

In the short term, the redevelopment and expansion of the Star Casino is set to pave the way for a whopping 12,000 construction and operational jobs by the time that the project is finished for it’s reopening in 2022. Working Safely With A Mobile Crane

To get into the specifics, a mobile crane is an instrumental piece of equipment, mounted on a truck base and controlled by pulleys and cables. One of the biggest benefits that mobile cranes provide is their level of flexibility and movability, especially in situations where multiple obstructions are present. Stand Clear - While team members will need to assist crane operators at times, never stand directly underneath a crane load. Back this stance up by ensuring that operators know not to lift a load directly over an employee, and reduce the odds of a potential collision.

An Introduction To Crawler Cranes

Crawler cranes are purposefully designed to make short work of the toughest jobs. They are available in a broad range of lifting capacities for applications in a wide variety of fields, and are commonly used for heavy-duty foundation work.

In essence, a crawler crane is a form of mobile crane, but is regarded as the smallest and largest possible varieties. Crawler cranes are cranes mounted on an undercarriage with a set of tracks, or crawlers, that provide stability and mobility. Fundamentally, they are heavy duty machines that utilise ‘tank-like’ treads in order to move throughout a construction site, and can lift in excess of 2500 tonnes.

While a crawler crane can lift the heaviest of loads, they also require the most on-site assembly out of all the mobile crane varieties. Depending on the size of the crane and weight of loads it is intended to lift, onsite assembly may include attaching the tracks, assembling the lattice boom and any additional counterweights. Due to their sheer size and treads, crawler cranes are not road legal.

As previously mentioned above, crawler cranes use tracks for movement, such as those found on a tank. Unlike other cranes, crawler cranes do not use outriggers for stability. The lattice boom is lighter than booms found on other cranes, so crawler cranes have a wider operating radius due to the lesser boom weight.

One of the features that enables the crawler crane to lift enormous weights is the counterweight. The counterweight provides the needed stability and support when the crane is used for lifting heavy items. Some large crawler crane models are equipped with counterweights that can be up to several tonnes. There are also crawler cranes with custom made booms that can reach several hundred metres into the air, which makes them ideal for large-scale construction projects.

The primary advantage of using a crawler crane is that since the crane is stable on its tracks with no outriggers, they can move around on site and perform each lift with little set-up.

A mobile crane’s lift capacity can vary anywhere between 2 tonnes for the smallest mini mobile cranes to 3000 tonnes for the most massive and most robust cranes. Mobile cranes rival fixed cranes for lift capacity but have unrivalled flexibility and versatility on the worksite.

Mobile cranes are the compact workhorses on any construction site. Brought in to do the problematic lifting, the mobile crane’s potential in terms of its strength can often be underestimated. So how much can a mobile crane lift and what type of crane has the best lift capacity? Read more to find out.

Can mobile cranes lift as much as tower cranes?

Some mobile cranes have a lift capacity of over 1000 tonnes! That is a lot of weight! These extreme high capacity cranes are not particularly common here in Australia; our mobile cranes tend to max out at 500 tonnes. The most popular mobile cranes in Australia are those that lift between 20 and 350 tonnes.

Without going into the specifics of load charts, it is essential to remember that the maximum load a tower crane can lift is around 20 tonnes. Mobile cranes can lift significantly more than a tower crane, and are less dependent on weather and external conditions. So why do most large scale developments use tower cranes? The answer is simple; a tower crane can be built much higher than a mobile crane can go, making them an obvious choice for high rise developments.

What type of Mobile Cranes are there?

Mobile cranes are not just the heavy lifters of the construction crane industry; they are flexible, versatile and efficient; making them an easy choice for many construction project managers and builders.

City Cranes are great at accessing tight spots but still providing significant tonnage. The City Crane vehicle is nimble and has a close turning circle, meaning inner-city laneways and built-up areas are not a problem for this handy machine. Franna Cranes are known for their durability and simplicity. These pick and carry cranes have a relatively slimline body which enables them to access tight locations, similar to the city crane. The Franna Crane is an all-terrain, four wheel drive vehicle, meaning worksites with loose gravel are no problem at all. Our Franna Cranes have max capacities between 20 tonnes and 28 tonnes depending on the model and can drive at speed on ordinary roads.

Mobile Slew Cranes can lift between 13 and 100+ tonnes and are flexible on the worksite and can lift and place with extreme precision. These are the tough, heavy workers of our crane family and are always popular with commercial construction and multi-storey developments.

The size mobile crane that you need for your project depends on several factors including accessibility of your site, ground conditions as well as the weight of the load you want to lift, the radius and height required for the lift and the maneuvering that is required.

Mobile cranes are useful heavy industry tools, used appropriately they can save a project in both time and money. It is not as simple as working out how heavy the load that you need to lift is and then determining the tonnage capacity of the crane that is required to lift it. What we need from you or at site inspection

What is the weight of the load that you need to lift?

Calculating the total weight of the load is essential information that your mobile crane hire team will need to help you determine what crane to choose. If you are unsure, you may need to consult an engineering professional to provide a load lift breakdown.

How far does the boom need to reach?

Calculate the approximate distance from the middle of the slew ring on the crane to the exact point where your lift needs to land.

Are there any clearance concerns?

Are there any lateral obstructions?

If indoors, what is the flooring like and does it need protection?

What is site access like?

Accessibility is another critical factor, both into the site and also on the site itself. It is essential to look at what the access points are, how wide they are and what sort of turning capacity is available on the site. For interior work, some of our smaller cranes can go through door frames and into lifts, so the width of these access points is also important to note.

Do you require the cranes to use a pick and carry function?

Most mobile cranes don’t pick and carry, for this we use franna cranes or humma cranes which are purposely built for this function.

Take into account potential crane hardware sizes.

What types of EWP’s are there?

Scissor Lift is an EWP that lifts straight up and down. They are simple to operate, however not nearly as versatile as the other types of EWP’s.

Boom Lift is another type of EWP. Boom lifts are either towable or truck mounted, towing them they can be attached as with any other towed vehicle to a truck or ute. These are the most popular of the EWP range. A mobile crane is a vehicle-mounted crane that is designed to lift and maneuver heavy loads in a variety of different industries and applications. There are mobile cranes for any weight that is more than what can be safely lifted or moved by a human. Counterweights are the weights either built into the body of a crane or applied additionally, that stop the crane from falling over when it is lifting an item.

Why are counterweights important?
Counterweights are extremely important when it comes to the engineering of a mobile crane or the planning of a lift. They are integral to ensuring that the crane remains stable and does not topple over during a lifting operation. Without the counterweights on a crane, it wouldn’t be able to lift it’s capacity.

What can happen if a counterweight is not used correctly?
In short if a counterweight is not used correctly, a crane can fall over either during the lift or as it lets go of its cargo. During a lift, if the counterweight is insufficient to balance the load that the crane is lifting, the crane can topple forward in the direction of the boom.

If the counterweight is too heavy for the weight of the boom, the crane is travelling up an incline or outriggers are not extended, the crane can topple backwards. If the ground conditions are uneven and you have not set the crane up with appropriate counterweights, the crane can also topple backwards.

Counterweight design is not just about the weight; the size and shape of the weight are also important. Engineers design mobile crane counterweights for the specific type of crane it is being used with to prevent crane accidents.

What are crane counterweights made of?

Cast iron counterweights are small, but because of their density, they provide enough weight to balance out even the most massive loads. What cranes use counterweights?
All cranes have counterweights including mini cranes, they are actually built into the crane. Mini cranes and city cranes do not tend to need or warrant the use of extra counterweights. A Franna Crane Superlifter carries a counterweight with it at all times on the front of the crane and then uses extra counterweights to classify as a superlifter, lifting up to 28 tonnes. Mobile slew cranes use counterweights as a standard practice, all lifts are different so therefore the calculations of the amount of counterweight needed is all different.

What is the difference?

The history of cranes

A crane has a sole purpose, to lift something too heavy to be otherwise manoeuvred and to safely move it to another location or place it back when safe to do so. Whilst we tend to think of cranes as modern utilitarian equipment, such as our mobile hire fleet, cranes have been used throughout history for the same purpose that they are used for today. In ancient Greece, cranes were used to assist with the lifting of marble pillars for buildings. Shipyards have used cranes since the middle ages to safely manoeuvre cargo onto the decks of ships, a practice that is still very much in place in 2020.

In ancient times, Greek cranes were powered by simple winding ropes around winches that were pulled by either men or donkeys, however, the rise of the Roman Empire saw the more mechanised compound pulley systems come into use. In the middle ages pulleys combined with large wheels, spun by men walking inside, or animals turning a large winch by walking in circles. Although rudimentary in design, the lifting capacity of these early cranes was 1 – 5 metric tonnes.

Industrial Revolution and Crane Design

The Industrial Revolution saw the next evolution in crane design, both in power sources and in technology. In 1850 the Fairbairn crane was patented, with its innovative design the first to utilise a curved jib (or arm). The use of pulleys, both fixed and moveable, enabled the crane to lift weights more than 10x that of its predecessors. A working example of the Fairbairn crane is still used in the Bristol Harbour in the UK.

The next evolution of the crane was the powering of the mechanism via steam in the late 1800s, with electric-powered cranes being the most common form of crane power by the end of the 19th century.

Cranes in the World Wars

World War One saw the next development in crane design and application with Hans Liebherr’s tower crane used for the rapid reconstruction of bombed cities during the war. The key difference with this crane was the levering action, with the tower top acting as the fulcrum and the jib counterbalanced by a weight. The basics of this design is still seen on most building sites throughout the world. The average lifting capacity of this style of crane is 40 tonnes with the Liebherr Group, Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1 garnering the title of the most powerful mobile crane ever built with a lift capacity of 1200 tonnes.

Cranes are now used in many different applications throughout the world, and even beyond to the International Space Station, making cranes truly a universal piece of machinery.
